When your trees, property, or home are damaged due to a storm or high winds, it can be quite a shock. While the only question running through your mind might be “how do I get this repaired as quickly as possible?”, eventually you might have other questions. We answer many of those questions below.

Dangerous situations abound with storm-damaged trees, so please keep a safe distance when surveying the damage.

Sometimes a fallen or broken tree may not seem dangerous, but there are certain things that make the situation more precarious, including:

Broken branches (some may be hidden from view)
Branches that have broken off but are wedged in the tree
Any level of tree decay that can make the tree unstable
Loose ground or heaving soil around the tree roots
Slight lean to the tree
Cracks or breaks in the tree

Is there any way to prevent storm damage?

Can ice or snow damage my trees?

Wet snow and ice are much heavier than you may think. Both can cause branches to break, sections of a tree to fall, or even an entire tree to come crashing down.

If the snow or ice storm happens late in the season, when trees and shrubs are starting to bud or flower, the cold can kill the buds. It’s unlikely to kill the tree but there probably won’t be many flowers (or fruit) that year.

What should I do if I notice damage to my tree caused by ice or snow?

Stay well away from the tree and call the tree care professionals at Rayzor’s Edge Tree Service for an inspection. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may not need to do anything right away. In other cases, dangerous branches will need to be removed quickly.

Some damage may not be noticeable until the spring, when leaves began to appear and sections of your tree turn out to be broken, damaged, or dead. When that happens, contact us for a professional tree pruning.

My tree (or branches) broke and fell from the weight of ice. What should I do?

What to do with a fallen or severely damaged tree depends on the situation. Here are some general guidelines:

If the tree or sections of the tree are blocking a roadway, call your local municipal services.
If the tree is touching or has brought down utility lines, call your utility company. Never go near a tree that is touching power lines!
If your tree or large branches have fallen on your driveway (so you can’t get out) or on a building, call us for emergency tree removal.
If sections of a tree have fallen in your yard, or if there are broken branches that don’t appear to be in danger of falling or causing any further damage, schedule a professional tree consultation.
Do NOT try to cut or remove ice-covered branches yourself, especially with a chainsaw. It’s easy to be injured by a chainsaw slipping on the ice or a branch under load reacting forcefully and unexpectedly when cut.

Can I fix ice damage to my tree?
